A 73-year-old man was transported to Hilo Medical Center on Tuesday after surviving a 115-foot fall into the Kilauea Caldera.
Harry Osachy of Kurtistown fell Monday while standing on the edge of the caldera at the Volcano House in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, said park spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane.
He was discovered Tuesday after a woman told park officials at about 4:45 p.m. that she heard someone calling for help while walking the Halemaumau Trail.
Osachy, who complained of pelvis and shoulder pain, was rescued by helicopter that evening as the sun began to set.
He had numerous scrapes and suffered from dehydration. It was unclear if he had any broken bones.
Ferracane said Osachy had fallen onto vegetation, which appeared to have broken his fall.
His status wasn’t immediately known.
